United Nations
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
The leading scientific intergovernmental body reporting exclusively about climate change to international decision makers on the basis of research of all the top climatological institutions.
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
The United Nations executive board on global development.
United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP)
The designated authority of the United Nations in environmental issues
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
International climate treaty aimed at stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous interference with the climate system. The UNFCCC chairs the most important international climate negotiations.
Special initiatives
350.org
Including renowned climatologist James Hansen, the 350-movement has set an ambitious goal for truly solving the climate crisis. Dr. Hansen concludes an atmospheric CO2 concentration of 350 ppm is the ultimate ceiling to prevent serious and potentially uncontrollable consequences. As this border has already been crossed, extreme efforts must be made to not only reduce emissions, but also effectively lower atmospheric carbon concentrations.
Climate Action Network (CAN)
A worldwide network of over 430 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working to promote government and individual action to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically sustainable levels. CAN is also closely involved as a respected and influential watchdog during UNFCCC led negotiations around the formation of the new international climate treaty, to be agreed upon in Kopenhagen in december 2009 and to take effect in 2012.
HIER (HERE) climate campaign
A Dutch cooperation of 42 national and international NGO's, including for example WWF, Red Cross, Oxfam and Greenpeace and supported by the Dutch Postcode Lottery. The combined HERE campaign conducts hundreds of climate projects worldwide, focussing both on mitigation and adaptation and ranging from life style changes to avoided deforestation. The HIER campaign is well recognized for carrying the 'green dot' logo, that became an international symbol in the fight against climate change.
WE climate campaign
WE is America's biggest civil climate movement, under the motto: 'We can solve the climate crisis'. A project of The Alliance for Climate Protection, founded by Nobel laureate and former Vice President Al Gore and with the ultimate aim to halt global warming.
Scientific community
British Antarctic Survey (BAS)
One of the leading environmental research centres focussing specifically on the climate conditions of Antarctica.
Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research Oslo (CICERO)
Climate research centre associated with the University of Oslo. Knowledge institute for all aspects concerning climate change.
Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)
Australia's leading climate research institute, contributing to the growing body of knowledge about climate change.
Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research
Leading international research institute on climate change. Part of the British Meteorological Office.
Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU)
Internationally recognized climate research centre belonging to Utrecht University. Influential publications about climate feedbacks, for instance paleo marine methane emissions.
Max Planck Institute for Meteorology
Internationally renowned German institute for climate research.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Federal scientific research agency and knowledge institute. From weather forecasts to global climate monitoring.
National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC)
Arctic climate watchdog measuring and communicating sea ice conditions. University of Colorado.
Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL)
Conducting policy evaluations and taking part in international climate research. Repeatedly publishing own estimated data on 'true' Chinese carbon emissions, that are presumed to be much higher.
Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research
German research centre addressing specific scientific questions about present climate changes - for instance the possibility of important tipping points within the global climate system.
Energy research
Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN)
Conducting research for the development of all forms of renewable energy, as well as CCS and hydrogen technology.
Energy Information Administration (EIA)
Easily accesible energy statistics from the U.S. government. Publishing own calculations concerning world wide energy consumption trends and scenarios.
International Energy Agency (IEA)
World's leading energy authority, publishing World Energy Outlooks. In 2008 the IEA reported a total investment of 45 trillion US dollars is urgently required for the development of renewable energies.
UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC)
Focal point for UK research on sustainable energy.
